Collections

Collections in the Teaching Resources Center support and enhance K-12 instruction, teacher education, and assist in the implementation of professional and state standards.

To locate TRC materials, search McConnell Library's Online Catalog and limit the location to the Teaching Resources Center.

K-12 Textbooks

Textbooks approved for use by the Virginia Department of Education, or utilized by local school districts, are available for check-out through the Teaching Resources Center.

The Teaching Resources Center was founded as a public review site for the VDOE textbook review process, representing Region Six.

Assistive Technology

According to the National Center on Accessible Information Technology in Education, "Assistive technology is technology used by individuals with disabilities to perform functions that might otherwise be difficult or impossible. Assistive technology can include mobility devices such as walkers and wheelchairs, as well as hardware, software, and peripherals that assist people with disabilities in accessing computers or other information technologies."

The TRC's collection of Assistive Technologies includes:

  • Recordable/Talking Photo Albums
  • Various switches and keyboards

Children's and Young Adult

The Teaching Resources Center's Children's and Young Adult collection contains fiction and non-fiction literature titles, similar to those found in a school library media center. Faculty and students in the College of Education and Human Development check out these materials to supplement their lessons or complete projects for their reading classes. 

Books in this collection are searchable in McConnell Library's online catalog. 

Curriculum and Instruction

Curriculum and instruction materials include information on national and state standards, reform movements in education, technology, educational psychology, and teaching methods. The collection contains information on:

  • Reading and writing instruction
  • Special Education
  • Adult Education
  • Physical Education activities
  • Inquiry and hands-on science and mathematics instruction
  • Mathematics and science skills and concepts
  • Environmental curriculum projects
  • ESL assistance

Also included are kits, activities, and game ideas for all ages:

  • Daily Classroom Activities
  • Counseling games/resources
  • DVDs on various subjects
  • Creative writing ideas
  • Manipulatives for mathematics instruction

Equipment

Equipment circulated through the TRC is primarily reserved for faculty, staff, and students in the College of Education and Human Development.

Equipment checks out for a maximum of seven and is non-renewable. 

Overdue fines for equipment are $0.50 per hour overdue.

Multicultural and Diversity

As part of the Diversity Initiative of the College of Education and Human Development, the Teaching Resources Center (TRC) has established a special collection of multicultural and diversity materials to be used by K-12 teachers.

The multicultural and diversity collection includes resources such as textbooks to assist with the teaching and integration of multiculturalism, and a variety of young adult and children's literature (fiction and non-fiction).  An assortment of videos can also be found in this section that focus on topics ranging from diversity to cultures of various countries.
