OCTH 656: Special Topics in Adult Rehabilitation
                                 
                                 Prerequisite:  Successful completion of OCTH 640, 642, 644 and 646 or permission of

                                 An overview of specialty services in physical dysfunction practice, including work
                                    programs/ergonomics, low vision rehabilitation and driver rehabilitation.
                                 
                                  
                                 
                                 Detailed Description of Content of the Course
                                 
                                 Topics include:
                                 
                                 
                                    
                                    - The role of the occupational therapist in work programs, low vision rehabilitation,
                                       and community mobility
 
                                    
                                    - Specialty training and certification programs in work/ergonomics, low vision and driver
                                       rehabilitation
 
                                    
                                    - Functional capacity evaluation
 
                                    
                                    - Vocational evaluation
 
                                    
                                    - Job demands analysis and worksite evaluations
 
                                    
                                    - Work conditioning/work hardening programs
 
                                    
                                    - Ergonomic evaluation and problem-solving
 
                                    
                                    - Injury prevention programs
 
                                    
                                    - The development and process of functional vision
 
                                    
                                    - Optometric assessment and treatment of low vision
 
                                    
                                    - Occupational therapy and team interventions for low vision
 
                                    
                                    - Visual rehabilitation of the neurologically involved person
 
                                    
                                    - Use of public and private transportation
 
                                    
                                    - Car transfers and driving from a wheelchair

                                 Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
                                 
                                 The material presented in readings and lectures will be reinforced through videotapes,
                                    demonstration, case studies and practice with those assessments and interventions
                                    appropriately used by entry-level practitioners.
                                 
                                  
                                 
                                 Goals and Objectives of the Course
                                 
                                  At completion of this course, students will be able to:
                                 
                                 
                                    
                                    - Evaluate the appropriateness of and discuss mechanisms for referring clients for additional
                                       services to specialists internal and external to the profession;
 
                                    
                                    - Given a workplace scenario, use ergonomic principles to modify the environment and
                                       adapt processes for the worker;
 
                                    
                                    - Given a case study of a client with low vision, explain the functional implications
                                       of his/her optometric assessment and suggest appropriate occupational therapy and
                                       team interventions;
 
                                    
                                    - Given a case scenario, provide recommendations for community mobility and address
                                       issues related to driver rehabilitation.
 
                                    
                                 
                                  
                                 
                                 Assessment Measures
                                 
                                 Participation in demonstration and practice sessions, tests and graded intervention
                                    plans may be used to assess the outcomes of this course.
