Detailed Description of Content of the Course
The preceptorship will provide a minimum of 180 hours of clinical practice experience
with community preceptors including but not limited to NPs, MDs, DOs, and PAs practicing
in the community with the focus of primary care across the lifespan.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The non-clinical portions of the course will be online to facilitate communication
between faculty & students and may include but are not limited to: faculty/student
directed discussions, reading assignments, and written work which will include clinical
logs. Because the course is online, audio or video presentations/lectures, discussion
boards, chat rooms and other instructional technology strategies may be used for communication
purposes. In addition it may include but not be limited to: video demonstration(s)
with consenting patients of various components demonstrating appropriate clinical
decision making of the evaluation and management of patient care across the lifespan.
Goals and Objectives of this Course
By the end of the course the student will be able to:
1. Employ effective communication and collaborative skills within the framework of
primary care (with both colleagues and patients)
2. Demonstrate appropriate consultative and referral skills.
3. Develop, implement and evaluate interventions to address health promotion/disease
prevention in families across the lifespan utilizing concepts of psychosocial dimensions
and cultural diversity.
4. Conduct a comprehensive & systematic assessment of health and illness parameters
in complex clinical situations across the lifespan.
5. Design, implement, and evaluate therapeutic interventions (education, medication
choice, referral and follow-up) based on nursing and other sciences.
6. Develop and sustain therapeutic relationships & partnerships with patients across
the lifespan and other professionals to facilitate optimal care and patient outcomes.
7. Demonstrate advanced levels of clinical judgment and decision making, systems
thinking and accountability in designing, delivering, and evaluating evidenced-based
care to improve patient outcomes.
8. Educate and guide families across the lifespan through complex health & situational
transitions.
9. Demonstrate practice acumen for independent functioning.
Assessment Measures
May include but are not limited to: Preceptor and faculty evaluation of clinical
performance. Completion of clinical logs. Case studies; quizzes; student presentations,
and other strategies including using available technology for direct observation of
clinical practice.
