V.    Course Description:
                                 
                                 Students are provided a foundation for health education, health promotion, and nursing
                                    practice in community health.  Topics include health promotion, environmental health,
                                    epidemiology, care of family as client, care of community as client, care of vulnerable
                                    populations, contemporary problems in community health nursing, genetic and genomic
                                    factors affecting health of individuals and families, and settings for community health
                                    nursing practice.  Students apply concepts of cultural competence, health promotion,
                                    and health education to population health. 
                                 
                                 VI.    Course Objectives:
                                 
                                 Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
                                 
                                 
                                    
                                    - Describe the scope, context, and roles of nurses in health promotion and community
                                       health practice.  
 
                                    
                                    - Provide safe, quality patient-centered care while integrating cultural competence
                                       and evidence-based practice in the care of the family and community as client.
 
                                    
                                    - Apply patient-care technologies as appropriate to address the needs of a diverse patient
                                       population in the development of teaching learning processes to promote health in
                                       the community.  
 
                                    
                                    - Examine the impact of socio-cultural, economic, legal, ethical, regulatory, political,
                                       and environmental factors influencing population health.
 
                                    
                                    - Apply epidemiological concepts, methods, research, and systems theory to determine
                                       the health status of a community.
 
                                    
                                    - Incorporate strategies to improve and promote individual, family, and population health
                                       in a variety of healthcare settings.
 
                                    
                                    - Explain the role of the community health nurse as a member of the interprofessional
                                       team caring for individuals, groups, and communities.
