V.    Course Description:

This course focuses on maternal-newborn care and on the care of children from infancy through adolescence. Conception, pregnancy, fetal development, childbirth, and postpartum care are addressed. Emphasis is placed on nursing care of families, child growth and development from conception through adolescence, and common recurring pediatric illnesses. Nursing strategies that promote health, reduce risk, and prevent disease will be included.

VI.    Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Integrate current knowledge from nursing science, the humanities, and social and natural sciences in the care of patients. (PO 1,4,5 )
  2. Examine selected health problems to include pathophysiology, growth and development, signs and symptoms, treatment, pharmacology, complications and prognosis. (PO 1,2,4)
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship of genetics and genomics to the care and treatment of infants, children, and child-bearing women. (PO 1,4)
  4. Integrate evidence-based practice to provide safe, quality, patient-centered care. (PO 1)
  5. Develop ethical, caring, culturally competent behaviors to advocate for women and children. (PO 1,5,4 )
  6. Recognize and take appropriate interventional measures in the event of domestic violence, child abuse, neglect, or maltreatment. (PO 1,4,5 )
  7. Analyze the role of the nurse as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team within the context of the healthcare environment. (PO 2,3,4,6 )
