ESHE 440: Emergency Medical Technician
Prerequisites: Current American Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR certification or
equivalent approved by instructor
Credit Hours: (6)
Upon successful completion of this course, the students will be eligible to take the
National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Exam required for the Commonwealth
of Virginia EMT certification. This course meets all the educational requirements
for the certification process as specific in the regulations of the Commonwealth of
Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
The course will have three components (1) didactic/lecture, (2) skills labs, and (3)
a ride along for field experience to meet the requirements of the National Registry
of EMT Exam required for the Commonwealth of Virginia EMT certification. Content includes:
the EMS Systems; Workforce Safety and Wellness; Medical, Legal, and Ethical Issues;
Communications and Documentation; Medical Terminology; the Human Body; Life Span Development;
Lifting and Moving Patients; Patient Assessment; Airway Management; Principles of
Pharmacology; Shock; BLS Resuscitation; Respiratory Emergencies; Cardiovascular emergencies;
Neurologic Emergencies; Gastrointestinal and Urologic Emergencies; Endocrine and Hematologic
Emergencies; Immunologic Emergencies; Toxicology; Psychiatric Emergencies; Head and
Spine Injuries; Chest Injuries; Abdomnial and Genitourinary Injuries; Orthopaedic
Injuries; Environmental Emergencies; Obstetrics and Neonatal Care; Pediatric Emergencies;
Geriatric Emergencies; Patients with Special Challenges; EMS Operations; Transport
Operations; Vehicle Extrication and Special Rescue; Incident Management; Terrorism
Response and Disaster Management; the Team Approach to Healthcare; National Incident
Management System (NIMS) 100, 200, 700, 800; Mass Causality Incident Response.
