Professor edits statistics encyclopedia, earns Nobel Peace Prize nomination

鈥淒aunting鈥 and 鈥渄eeply rewarding鈥 is how Associate Professor of Mathematics and Statistics Miodrag Lovric describes his recent task serving as editor of the International Encyclopedia of Statistical Science, Second Edition.

The new edition spans four volumes containing 3,150 pages. More than 700 mathematicians and scholars from 110 countries contributed to the encyclopedia.

鈥淐oordinating such a massive scholarly effort required constant communication across time zones, careful quality control and attention to detail to maintain consistency and accuracy across hundreds of entries,鈥 Lovric said.

In addition to his editorial work, Lovric authored 17 new papers and co-authored 13 new papers. 鈥淏alancing these roles was demanding but deeply fulfilling,鈥 he said.

Lovric noted that he is 鈥減articularly proud鈥 that three Radford students co-authored a chapter with him. Rose Chamberlain, Matthew Ross and Calvin Long helped research and write the chapter 鈥淭he P-Value Chronicles: Unmasking Fourteen Widespread Misconceptions.鈥

鈥淭heir participation showcases Radford鈥檚 strong commitment to undergraduate research,鈥 Lovric said, 鈥渁nd that our students can contribute meaningfully to a publication of international stature.鈥

The International Encyclopedia of Statistical Science, Second Edition, opens with four distinguished forewords. The first was written by professor and dean of Radford鈥檚 Artis College of Science and Technology, Steven Bachrach, 鈥渨hose support was vital throughout the project.鈥 Lovric noted. Other forwards were written by Neil Sigmon, professor and chair of Radford鈥檚 Department of Mathematics and Statistics; Bradley Efron of Stanford University, 鈥渙ne of the most influential statisticians of our time,鈥 Lovric said 鈥 and University of Chicago professor James Heckman, a Nobel Prize laureate in economics.

鈥淚 am immensely grateful to each of them for their contributions,鈥 Lovric said.

The encyclopedia project has earned global recognition beyond the scholarly community. Lovric and his editorial team have been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize by qualified nominators from Cambodia and Spain, with additional nominations anticipated.

Lovric鈥檚 work on the encyclopedia establishes 福利导在线观看 as the publication鈥檚 academic home. 鈥淚t underscores,鈥 he said, 鈥渢hat the editorial leadership 鈥 including me 鈥 and much of the scholarly coordination originated right here in Radford鈥檚 Department of Mathematics and Statistics.鈥

This, Lovric noted, elevates Radford鈥檚 profile within the global academic community, demonstrates its capacity to host and lead a large-scale scholarly initiative and highlights the university鈥檚 commitment to international collaboration and excellence in statistics.

鈥淭his project reflects positively on 福利导在线观看鈥檚 scholarly environment,鈥 he said, 鈥渁nd reinforces our identity as a hub for impactful statistical research and education.鈥

Lovric also served as editor of the encyclopedia鈥檚 first edition in 2011, which also led to his nomination for a Nobel Peace Prize by qualified nominators from seven countries: Serbia, Lovric鈥檚 home country; the United States; Spain; Brazil; Botswana; Bosnia; and India.

Amstat News, a magazine by the American Statistical Association, described the encyclopedia as 鈥渢he largest international scientific project ever conducted in history.鈥

鈥淭he second edition is even larger,鈥 Lovric said, 鈥渨ith broader coverage and deeper global representation.鈥
